Tips for decorating your table:

1) Occasion - This may seem like a no-brainer, but it is easy to forget the reason why you are decorating a table in the pursuit of big, fun, fancy or original ideas.  Frequently ask yourself throughout the design, shopping, and decorating process if your table still represents the event.

2) Scale - Your table design should not overpower the room

it is in or the surroundings.  Neither should the table decora-

tions appear to be an afterthought.  A good rule of thumb is

that your decorations should be no taller than one-half the

width of a round or square table and no taller than one-third

the length of a rectangular table.  Remember too that an

elaborate centerpiece can become an annoying obstruction

for friends sitting across the table from each other.

3) Balance - Be sure there is harmony between your place

settings and the table decorations - they are all part of the

overall design.  The plates and decorations should carry the

same level of elegance and finesse.  Your eyes should see

the whole table as a single picture.  Do not place a Cartier

piece on the same table as paper plates.

4) Color - Simply put, all the pieces of your table design need to match.  Often, it is easiest to start with the tablecloth or runner the same way that an interior designer will pick the fabric for a room before selecting the paint.  However, if a fanciful centerpiece has caught  your eye, a good fabric store can help you find a perfect match for your covering and your napkins.

5) Dining - Remember, it's ultimately about the food.  Make sure your design leaves room for plates, glasses, utensils, napkins, bowls, salt and pepper shakers, serving dishes, and butter.  The more formal your dinner, the more area you may need to leave open for the place settings.  The most stunning table presentation is for naught if your guests can't relax and enjoy their meal together for lack of table space and elbow room.
